The author (Megumi Raphael Toyama) was born in Sapporo, Hokkaido, and pursued undergraduate and graduate studies at Aoyama Gakuin University, where he specialized in English linguistics, theoretical linguistics, and the philosophy of language. He subsequently engaged in interdisciplinary graduate-level studies at International Christian University (ICU), focusing on clinical psychology, Christian thought, and communication theory. He also conducted research in philosophy and theology at the Institute for Medieval Philosophy at Sophia University.
Professionally, he has accumulated extensive experience as an English educator at both public and private secondary schools, consistently preparing students for admission to top-tier Japanese universities, including the University of Tokyo, Keio University, Waseda University, and Sophia University. Since 1990, he has led a long-standing “Medical and STEM Advancement Program” at his institution, producing a large number of successful applicants to both national and private medical schools.
In 1995, he was among the earliest educators in Japan to actively integrate internet technologies and personal computing into English language instruction. He pioneered a presentation-based instructional method that incorporated PowerPoint and digital projection as essential pedagogical tools. He also established the "Teaching Quality Enhancement Committee", an inter-institutional professional development initiative aimed at advancing instructional design and practice.
As Lead Instructor in a Distance Learning English Program, he contributed to the expansion of online education with measurable success. He has also held a variety of leadership positions, including:
Chief Dormitory Supervisor and Director of Residential Affairs at a metropolitan boarding high school
Department Chair of English at several prominent college-preparatory schools
Academic Head of Residential Education and Executive Assistant to the Principal at an integrated junior and senior high school

He has authored numerous reference works, study guides, and educational texts, and is a member of the Japan Medical Journalists Association (MJA) and the Japan Association of Medical Interpreters (J.E). He holds Grade 1 Certification in the Eiken Test of Practical English Proficiency, and serves as an official Eiken speaking examiner. In addition, he holds a second-degree black belt in karate.
His pedagogical approach is distinguished by a rigorously structured grammar-based methodology and an original Communication Program (CP) that integrates both English and Japanese presentation skills. Under his direction, in 2010 and 2013, the program achieved a 100% acceptance and enrollment rate into medical and veterinary schools.
Since 2013, he has served as the Director of CleP Initiative, an institute dedicated to advanced instruction in English and academic presentation. He is currently affiliated with a prominent private secondary institution in Tokyo, where he teaches English and continues to develop curricular innovation.
