Addressing learner diversity is becoming increasingly important in education. Two key approaches are UDL (Universal Design for Learning) and DI (Differentiated Instruction). Both share the same goal of supporting diverse learners, but they differ in approach.
What is UDL?
UDL is about proactively designing learning environments to be accessible for all. It is built on three key principles:・Multiple means of representation (offering information in different ways)・Multiple means of action and expression (allowing learners to demonstrate knowledge in various forms)・Multiple means of engagement (supporting motivation and interest through diverse strategies)
What is DI?
DI focuses on adjusting instruction to match the needs and levels of individual learners. It often differentiates:
・Content (adjusting the complexity of material)
・Process (varying learning activities or tasks)・Product (allowing different forms of final outputs)
Similarities and Differences
Similarity: Both aim to support learner diversity.Difference: UDL designs flexible environments in advance, while DI adapts instruction in response to learners’ needs.
Conclusion
In short, UDL is about designing for inclusion from the start, and DI is about tailoring instruction as needed. When combined, they create more inclusive and adaptable teaching practices.
